The world's largest scientific society, the American Chemical Society (ACS) was founded as a non-profit organization in New York City in 1876 and was granted a federal charter by Congress in 1937. The mission of the organization is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people. Toward that end, ACS advances scholarly knowledge; provides professional services and support; and communicates the value of chemistry and science education to various audiences.
