Ocean Opportunity

Ocean Opportunity sponsors, endorses, and facilitates programs in the ocean science & technology communities that have a tangible and measureable ability to reach, and foster a new global appreciation of a developing ocean literate society. OO's approach is to engage and inspire stakeholders in a given interest area or program to take action on critical ocean issues that offer reciprocal value for the stakeholders, the ocean, and humanity. While emphasizing community outreach and education through various creative media outlets, interest areas and programs reach those that need to be reached at a grassroots level.

The Inland Blue Holes of Abaco
This is an online resource.
Yes, there are still stones left unturned on Planet Earth. Sometimes it is difficult to find them, but those special places that are out of sight need not be out of mind. Underwater caves in the Bahamas harbor numerous discoveries of critical scientific significance....fossils from extinct animals, cave adapted marine life, speleothems dating tens of thousands of years old, and so on. This is an environment that few will ever experience, but everyone needs to be aware of, as these caves are threatened by human development.

Blue Sharks of the Ocean State
This is an online resource.
Sharks are under immense human pressures. So much so, that their demise is having pronounced impacts on our global ocean ecosystem. To better protect sharks, more people need an opportunity to witness or experience them. In summer 2008, our field team set out to capture the blue shark on video. This animal is right in the backyard of Rhode Islanders, and we have created a number of resources to connect citizens of the Ocean State with this neighbor.
